In a deal that tops even the multi-billion dollar acquisition of ARM by Softbank, Qualcomm, the renowned American multinational semiconductor and telecommunications equipment company, has announced today that it is acquiring NXP Semiconductor, a Dutch global semiconductor manufacturer headquartered in Eindhoven, Netherlands. NXP, co-inventor of NFC (Near Field Communication) in a partnership with Sony, is currently the fifth-largest non-memory semiconductor supplier globally, and the leading semiconductor supplier for the Secure Identification, Automotive and Digital Networking industries.
In a press release, Qualcomm’s CEO Steve Mollenkopf stated that the NXP acquisition would accelerate the company’s strategy in extending its leading mobile technology into robust new opportunities, allowing them to be well positioned to lead by delivering integrated semiconductor solutions at scale.
Qualcomm said it would acquire all of the issued and outstanding shares of NXP for the cool sum of $110 per share – in cash. The transaction, which will be necessarily submitted to regulatory approval, isn’t expected to close until the end of 2017. The company also announced that the resulting technology giant is expected to have annual revenues of more than $30 billion, serviceable addressable markets of $138 billion in 2020 and leadership positions across mobile, automotive, IoT, security, RF and networking.
