The PlayStation 4 will soon gain the ability to use external hard drives, with an upcoming software update to add support for the feature that has been available to Xbox One owners for a long time. Sony offered a preview of the upcoming update, which will add support for USB 3.0 external drives up to 8TB in size, earlier today.

External hard drive support will be welcomed by PS4 gamers around the world, as it will enable them to install games on a USB drive once they run out of the built-in storage. Currently, the only way to upgrade storage on a PS4 is to manually install a hard drive, a process not everyone would be comfortable with despite the ease with which it can be done on the latest PlayStation.

Sony says the update – featuring version number 4.50 – will also bring support for custom wallpapers, a simplified notifications system, and the ability for users to watch 3D Blu-Ray movies directly on the PlayStation VR headset. A beta version of the update will be made available to those who enrolled today, with the release date for the final version to be announced in the coming weeks.
