Oracle adds analytics to MySQL in the cloud


Oracle is combining OLTP (on-line transaction processing) and OLAP (on-line analytical processing) providers in its open supply MySQL database within the Oracle Cloud, by way of Oracle MySQL Database Service with the MySQL Analytics Engine.

With this Oracle Cloud service being launched December 2, customers achieve the power to run subtle analytics in opposition to their operational MySQL database. The MySQL Analytics Engine is an in-memory analytics accelerator that may scale to hundreds of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) cores.

Positioned to compete with the Amazon Redshift cloud information warehouse, the Oracle MySQL Database Service with the MySQL Analytics Engine saves customers from having to combine with a separate analytics database. Database directors and builders achieve a unified platform for OLTP and OLAP workloads. OLAP has not been a specialty of MySQL up to now.

Capabilities of the MySQL Analytics Engine embody:

  • In-memory, hybrid columnar processing
  • Inter-node and intra-node parallelism optimized for Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
  • Distributed question processing algorithms

To add the analytics capabilities, the MySQL optimizer was enhanced to assist analytics whereas the parser itself was unaltered. Hence, the prevailing MySQL syntax continues to work as is. With the analytics not requiring upkeep or improvement of any indexes, information updates made by customers are propogated to the analytics engine and obtainable to be queried instantly.
