Oracle CTO Larry Ellison Taunts Amazon as "20 Years Behind&…

Oracle Corp’s chief technology officer Larry Ellison minced no words in ridiculing Amazon.com Inc and its Amazon Web Services cloud computing platform.

While delivering his keynote address at the Oracle OpenWorld 2016 in San Francisco’s Moscone Center, Ellison [pictured here] lashed out at Amazon, saying that Amazon databases are 20 years behind the latest release of the Oracle Database in the Cloud.

Oracle’s revenue growth has slowed down in the last few quarters, raising investor concern about the company’s ability to transition from its traditional approach of licensing software to the so called cloud computing method.

Oracle has now embarked on a campaign to prove that its next-generation Oracle cloud is far superior to Amazon, touting it as a low-cost alternative to Amazon Web Services or AWS. Forrester Research released a report earlier this year that ranked AWS as the leader in public cloud infrastructure, while Oracle trailed at sixth place.

In his keynote presentation, Ellison shared benchmark test results that showed Oracle Database-as-a-Service or DBaaS performed up to 105 times faster for Analytics workloads than Amazon Redshift.

It was also shown to be 35 times faster for online transaction processing or OLTP than Amazon Aurora, and 1000 times faster for mixed workloads compared to Amazon DBaaS.

Further, Ellison demonstrated that Oracle Cloud is optimized for running Oracle Database, while Amazon Web Services is not. An Oracle Database running on Oracle Cloud performed up to 24 times faster than an Oracle Database running on AWS.

“Oracle’s new technologies will drive the Cloud databases and infrastructure of the future. Amazon are decades behind in every database area that matters, and their systems are more closed than mainframe computers,” Ellison said.

According to Ellison, Amazon databases are not compatible with on-premise enterprise database applications. He also demonstrated that AWS is not optimized for Oracle Database.

“Amazon has three databases, Aurora for OLTP, Redshift for analytics and DynamoDB, which is it’s NoSQL database. All three run only in AWS, no place else,” Ellison added.
