The OKAA VR intends to make sure that the virtual reality (VR) market gets another small player that will hopefully explode in terms of sales. The OKAA VR is a pocket-friendly VR panorama camera that delivers up to 720° of viewing angle that will keep panoramic photography lovers and outdoor sports enthusiasts happy.

Rather than be restricted by the camera on your smartphones or DSLRs, the OKAA VR allows you to capture more than the usual depth of field. With the OKAA VR, you can show off your prowess in your favorite sport in full glory. How about when you have a really, really large group of people whom you would like to snap a wefie? The OKAA VR is here to save the day, as it gets the whole group in, in addition to a generous amount of the background as well.

The OKAA VR arrives in a small square shape that measures 69mm x 63mm x 48mm while tipping the scales at 168 grams, with three colors to choose from. It is tiny enough to fit into most pockets without resulting in an unsightly bulge, and you can simply leave it on a table or use a GorillaPod to grasp it, as the OKAA VR gets to work by recording all that is going on around thanks to its two 360° lens — one on each side, resulting in a 720° VR panoramic video experience.

The OKAA VR itself will have the necessary software within that deals with image stitching automatically, while it also allows you to enjoy a preview of its work in real time. Best of all is, your panoramic VR videos captured will be stored in high quality Full HD resolution at a smooth 30 fps.

Still images are captured at a resolution of 4.5-megapixels, and the lens itself is made up of 7 layers of precision optical glass. Expect the dual lens (horizontal 360° and longitudinal 360°) to arrive with a maximum aperture of F2.0, while the 0.96″ LCD display will show you the current settings of the OKAA VR.

There are three buttons located on the side of the OKAA VR in order to minimize the learning curve, and obviously one of them is the Power On/Off button. Since the OKAA VR is IPX8 certified, this means it is waterproof up to 3 meters for 30 minutes. This enables the OKAA VR to be used even when it is pouring cats and dogs out there — just make sure that you are properly attired then, and that your accompanying smartphone will be sealed in a waterproof case or bag as well!

The focus is fixed, however, so it will take some time to figure out which is the best distance from which you should capture your daring escapades. Available scene modes where one can choose from include Photo and Video modes, while the white balance options are auto, daylight, cloudy, fluorescent, and incandescent.

The OKAA VR will connect to a compatible smartphone or tablet via Wi-Fi as long as it remains within a 20 meter radius. All videos and photos captured will be stored locally on a microSD memory card, where it will be able to handle up to 128GB of storage space. It’s 2,000mAh battery is touted to run for up to 1.5 hours before requiring a recharge. The micro USB from where you charge it and microSD memory card slots are protected by a rubber flap in order to help the OKAA VR maintain its IPX8 rating.

The OKAA VR will work with its OKAA app, and once the desired scene is captured, you can use the app to share the results of your video shots via social media such as Weibo and QQ. Right now, the OKAA VR is available as a crowdfunding project for 1,199 yuan (US$180), although those who prefer to wait until this panoramic VR camera actually rolls off the production line will have to fork out 1,699 yuan (US$255).
