Official LineageOS builds now available for select phones …

212

The former developers of the popular CyanogenMod software for smartphones and other devices have been migrating to a new project called LineageOS for the past few weeks.

Now they’ve released the first official builds of LineageOS. It’s already available for download for a small set of phone, and eventually there will be official builds for more than 80 devices.

Unofficial builds have actually been available for a while, since the source code is available for anyone to compile on their own. But Some of the first officially supported devices include:

  • Google Nexus 5X
  • Google Nexus 6P
  • Motorola Moto G4 and G4 Plus
  • Moto X Pure Edition (2015)
  • Moto E
  • Nextbit Robin
  • OnePlus One
  • Samsung Galaxy S III
  • Xiaomi Redmi 1S
  • Xiaomi Mi 3w and Mi 4

Don’t expect a lot of new features in LineageOS just yet. Version 14.1 is based on Android 7.1 Nougat and basically picks up where CyanogenMod 14.1 left off. But there’s a new logo and splash screen and the team has migrated to new build servers and plans to roll out updated builds on a weekly basis.

The change is due to Cyanogen Inc’s decision to get out of the operating system space altogether. Cyanogen Inc is a company that was started by some of the core developers of CyanogenMod in an effort to produce a commercial version of the custom ROM called Cyanogen OS.

Recently the company shifted strategy to focus on building add-ons to Android for use by phone makers, effectively killing off Cyanogen OS and some of the resources used by the developers of the open source CyanogenMod operating system. For that reason, and to avoid trademark violations, the team chose a new name and started a new project.
