OCZ has announced the new VX500 line of 2.5-inch SATA solid state drives utilizing 15nm MLC NAND flash memory and Toshiba’s TC358790 controller. The new series is targeted at mainstream desktop and notebook users who are looking at upgrade from traditional hard disk drives.
The VX500 drives are backed by OEM-level testing and deliver endurance ratings of 74 to 592 terabytes written (TBW), which makes them suitable even for write-intensive applications such as content creation, revolving media/game storage, or as a scratch disk. The endurance rating is around three times higher than TLC-based SSDs available on the market. They have been designed for mixed workload environments representative of mainstream users who are looking for a serious performance boost. OCZ claims the new VX500 drives deliver sequential read speeds of up to 550 MB/s and write speeds of up to 515 MB/s. Random read speeds are claimed to go up to 92,000 IOPS while random writes reach 65,000 IOPS.
Apart from significantly higher performance, the VX500 SSDs also offer enhanced durability as well as lower power consumption when compared to traditional hard drives. They are much lighter as well, weighing in at only 54 grams.
The OCZ VX500 SATA solid state drives will be available in four different capacities – 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. In the US, these drives have been priced at $63.99, $92.79, $152.52, and $337.06, respectively. All drives come backed by a 5-year warranty from OCZ and also include a copy of Acronis TrueImage disk cloning software. We expect these drives to become available in Singapore in the near future.
