A Baidu Forums member with the username USG Ishimura has shared some interesting new info regarding NVIDIA’s Volta GPUs as well as the Pascal refresh.
First let’s talk about the Pascal refresh. NVIDIA will apparently use a newer 16nm process to allow Pascal GPUs to achieve higher clock speeds while maintaining or improving stability further. These new GPUs could possible come clocked closer to 2 GHz out of the factory, utilizing faster GDDR5X memory as well. The entry level GP107 core though, will continue to use GDDR5 memory. Higher-end products based on the GP102 GPU.
Volta on the other hand, which is going to succeed the current Pascal architecture, will boast of faster HBM2 memory for the higher end products and GDDR6 memory from Micron and Samsung on the more affordable products aimed at the consumer market. GDDR5X memory is expected to hit peak bandwidth of 16 GB/s, which is a fairly significant upgrade from the 10 GB/s bandwidth that currently GDDR5X memory is capable of reaching. It also offers greater efficiency compared to GDDR5X, consuming lower power. In addition to faster memory, capacities will see a major jump as well. The 256-bit cards are expected to arrive with at least 16GB of VRAM, twice as much as the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070. The flagship GV102 GPU on the other hand could pack up to 48GB of VRAM. First products based on Volta are expected to be released in 2018, with the first products targeted primarily at the professional segment. Consumer products based on Volta are expected to come in later.
