PernixData makes a data storage accelerator and a scale-out analytics engine for data centers; lesser-known Calm.io makes a DevOps automation platform.
Nutanix, rapidly becoming a leader in the hyperconverged data center infrastructure space, added some key new-gen intellectual property and engineering talent Aug. 28 by announcing the acquisition of PernixData and Calm.io.
Financial terms of the separate transactions, which were made Aug. 3, were not released.
PernixData makes a data storage accelerator and a scale-out analytics engine for virtualized data centers, a couple of products that Nutanix lacked and that are important in designing and building new-age data centers.
Lesser-known Calm.io makes a DevOps automation platform, something else Nutanix needed to have on its own shelf. DevOps, a methodology that enables developers and operations specialists to work together in real time to enable continuous application iteration, is one of the hottest trends in IT right now.
New Enterprise Cloud Platform in the Works
With the acquisitions, Nutanix said it can accelerate the delivery of an enterprise cloud platform “that rivals the agility, automation and consumer-grade simplicity of the public cloud but with the control, security and attractive long-term economics of on-premises infrastructure,” Nutanix founder, CEO and Chairman Dheeraj Pandey said on a conference call.
If Nutanix can actually bridge the positive attributes of the public cloud with those of the private cloud, and yet keep costs reasonable, it will force a high number of companies to look closely at its offering. Few cloud management vendors have been able to do exactly that.
In addition, Nutanix said it now will be able to pioneer new software stacks for storage-class memory systems, enhance its Application Mobility Fabric (AMF) with cross-cloud workload migration and bring improved cloud-inspired orchestration and workflow automation to its Prism management software.
Nutanix and PernixData, both based in San Jose, Calif., already share an architectural design philosophy: That is for next-generation data-center fabrics to keep data and applications physically close to each other in order to drive the fastest possible performance and to deliver flexible, cost-effective infrastructure scaling.
The Idea Is to Replace Traditional Storage Silos
Thus, the two companies plan to develop an advanced data stack to replace traditional storage silos and high-latency networks with newer storage-class memory and advanced interconnects, Nutanix said. These planned strategic investments in new server and storage technologies will be aimed to provide customers with a refreshed data fabric.
San Francisco-based Calm.io and the Nutanix team will work to bring an application-first approach to choosing, managing and consuming IT infrastructure—enabling customers to pick the right cloud for each application.
Nutanix said it plans to add cloud automation and management capabilities to its existing software stack to deliver application and service orchestration, runtime lifecycle management, policy-based governance, comprehensive reporting and auditing services to support all application environments, including virtual machines, containers and microservices.
