If you were banned from Pokemon Go for using an add-on map that allowed you to see where Pokemon were located, your account may soon be unbanned. John Hanke, CEO of Niantic, says the company has decided to reverse those bans. This change of heart doesn’t apply to bans for other offenses like botting and using emulators.
Since users may not have realized the problems associated with using add-on maps, their bans are being reversed. However, if you use an add-on map moving forward, your account may still be terminated.
Some players may not have realised that some add-on map apps do more than just show you nearby Pokémon. Each end-user app can be used as a collection tool by the app creator, invisibly collecting and forwarding data to the app creator with or without the knowledge of the end user. These apps can have an effect similar to DDoS attacks on our servers, – Hanke
