In a space exploration mission Vodafone Germany has plans to build a 4G network on the moon. The 4G network would be installed on the moon next year, in 2019, the provider mentions. The initiative is part of a space mission by the German PTScientists.

The 4G network will be built to will establish a connection with two Audi lunar cars, who can send their video signal to earth. Vodafone uses Nokia’s telecom hardware for the network. Vodafone explained that the 4G network on the moon will be the lightest ever developed and will weigh less than one kilo. However, that will be enough to allow the robot Audi vehicles which are sent on the mission to transmit HD video and data from the lunar surface.

SpaceX

Next year, the lunar cars and the telecommand center will be brought into orbit around the earth with the help of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. From there it will be traveling to the moon. The provider says not to opt for a 5G network, because the technology is still in a test phase for this. Therefore, the company can not ensure a stable connection. The plan is to visit the Apollo 17 landing site.

Well, if Space /Moon tourism ever gets a thing, at least you’ll have LTE / 4G smartphone reception 😉
