Nexbox is from those TV box makers that pack its products with different processors. I mean there are many brands powering its products with the same brand CPUs. As for Nexbox, we have already reviewed a few products from this manufacturer such as the A1 and the T10, and both of them are powered with an Amlogic S912 and Intel Z8300 processors, respectively. This is the main reason of my surprise, when I saw the Nexbox A95X King equipped with a Rockchip RK3229 processor. Moreover, this is very popular series of TV boxes including the Nexbox A95X and Nexbox A95X Plus, and they come with different SoCs as well – Amlogic S905 and Amlogic S905X chipsets, respectively. Thus this manufacturer comes in with different CPUs for every model. But to say the Nexbox A95X King is packed with a Rockchip RK3229 CPU means not to say anything, so let’s dig deeper to explore more.

Nexbox A95X King Appearance

It’s senseless to talk about the design of a TV box, because no one takes it into account when buying such a product. Moreover, almost all TV boxes have the same appearance, and only rare devices offer something interesting. We have reviewed several TV boxes with attractive design such as the Xiaomi Mi Box, YUNDOO Y2, Sunvell T95Z Plus, or the Emish X800. The rest of TV boxes come in a square-shaped design, and the Nexbox A95X King is no exception. So let’s see what interfaces are located on the sides of this model.

The front side carries a power button, a notification LED, and a LED display showing the LAN and WiFi connections as well as the time. Not that important feature, but still it’s better than a blank front panel. The back side comes with a WiFi antenna, a SPDIF, RJ45, AV, HDMI ports and a DC5V port for charging. There are also two USB 2.0 ports on the left side accompanied with a TF card slot for memory expansion. The right side is blank.

The Nexbox A95X King comes at dimensions of 12.00 x 10.00 x 2.80 cm and weighs only 158 grams.

Nexbox A95X King Processor

The key feature of the Nexbox A95X King is its processor, and though it’s not the most powerful CPU available in the market, it caused a huge stir around it. As a result, the Rockchip RK3229 chip has made this TV box very popular. So what’s interesting in this CPU?

The RK3229 was announced at CES 2016 alongside with its more powerful sibling dubbed as the RK3399. However, the Nexbox A95X King is not the first device with this amazing SoC, as there are TV boxes like the Dolamee D5 and SCISHION V88. And those who have tested this processor claim it’s a worthy competitor to the much popular Amlogic S905. But there are real differences between these two chipsets that make me think the RK3229 is newer, but it still yields the aforementioned processor. Generally, the Rockchip RK3229 costs too less for a 4K and H.265 capabilities. But there are some shortcomings in terms of faster connectivity including USB 3.0, Gigabit Ethernet, and 802.11ac. Moreover, many users think the major drawback is the OS – Android 4.4, while its main competitor supports Android 5.1.

Anyway, the Rockchip RK3229 comes is a quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor clocked at 1.5GHz. It is in a great tandem with an ARM Mali-400MP2 GPU. This helps the TV box to decode videos at:

– 4K2K 10-bit H.265 @ 60 fps (up to 200 Mbps)

– 4K 10-bit H.264 @ 30 fps (up to 250 Mbps)

– 4K 8-bit VP9 @ 30 fps (up to 200 Mbps)

It also supports 10-bit H.264 (Hi10p) and HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 1.4/2.2 + CVBS.

As for benchmarks, the Rockchip RK3229 scores not impressive in comparison to the Amlogic S905:

Benchmark Rockchip RK3229 Amlogic S905
Antutu 6.0 21.000 35000
AnTuTu Video Tester 928 points, 27/30 fully spported 928 points, 27/30 fully spported
Ice Storm Unlimited 3114 points 7123 points
Ice Storm Extreme 2219 points 4643 points
GeekBench3 (Single core) 352 points 580 points
GeekBench3 (Multi core) 1153 points 1655 points

Nexbox A95X Features

The rest of Nexbox A95X King features include a 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory, 2.4GHz WiFi, Surround Sound 5.1, Kodi 16.1 pre-installed, Miracast, DLNA, Airplay to mirror you phone on a big TV screen and so on. As you see, one of the selling points refers the True 4K (3840×2160 pixels resolution) support as well as H.265 and VP9.

Conclusion

The Nexbox A95X King is the worthy successor of this line, but this statement doesn’t refer to the features list. I mean we have already seen the A95X series TV boxes are quite affordable, and the King version is no exception. The Nexbox A95X King is available for only $28.24, which is a great pricing for a 4K x 2K supporting box. Moreover, we are dealing with a TV box supporting a special 3D graphics acceleration. Thus the Nexbox A95X King is one of the cheapest TV boxes capable of providing great 4K and 3D video performance.
