Netflix Introduces Offline Viewing

235

Netflix now lets you download series and movies so they can be watched offline.

Netflix announced today that it’s releasing a new feature which will let you bring Netflix beyond the net. While the feature isn’t universal, offline playback will be available for “many of your favorite streaming series and movies.” Currently, the selection of downloadable content includes movies and shows produced by Netflix themselves (such as Stranger Things, Narcos, House of Cards and more), but also an assortment of other content. Breaking Bad, Nightcrawler and Mad Men are among the choices currently available for download.

Once you update to the latest version of Netflix on Android or iOS devices, you’ll find a download button next to the play button which lets you grab the series. Netflix is offering the download in both standard definition, and high definition (HD). The Netflix help page spells out the difference: “Standard quality is a slightly lower video resolution that requires less storage space and takes less time to download. Higher quality is a higher video resolution that requires more storage space and takes more time to download.”

Now everyone with low datacaps can watch Netflix on the bus

Netflix has previously stated that they were unlikely to embrace offline streaming, but with other services like Amazon Prime and Vudu launching similar features, maybe it was only a matter of time before Netflix caved as well. Offline streaming isn’t only a good feature when you’re on the subway, or away on a wifi-free holiday, but can also enhance the viewing experience in regions without a fast or reliable connection. Offline playback is available for all Netflix subscription packages, so you don’t need to pay anything extra to get the feature.
