Just like many other smartphone makers, Motorola has just announced two new devices during the year’s biggest tech event, MWC 2017, held in Barcelona. Moto G5 and G5 Plus are the successors of last year’s Moto G4 and G4 Plus.
Moto G5 and G5 Plus come with full metal backs, an upgrade to the metal trim on last year’s models. The new devices both have fingerprint sensors just below the display, embedded in small elliptical buttons. Motorola says that the aluminum exterior has been diamond cut and it features water-repellant nano-coating.
The rear camera on the back is located in a large circle, which gives it a unique and recognizable shape, quite different to its predecessors. The smartphones will be offered in multiple color variants, Fine Gold and Lunar Gray, as well as Sapphire Blue for the G5.
Up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage
Moto G5 features a 5-inch display, while the slightly larger G5 Plus has a screen size of 5.2 inches. Both phones have 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution, with 441ppi on the G5 and 424ppi on the G5 Plus, while both screens are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 coating.
The Moto G5 runs an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 SoC, clocked at 1.4GHz with 2 or 3GB of RAM, while the G5 Plus comes with a 2.0GHz octa-core Snapdragon 625 chipset and 2, 3 or 4GB of RAM, depending on the region.
Moto G5 features 16 or 32GB of internal storage, while the G5 Plus comes in multiple variants with different storage, including 16, 32 and 64GB, depending on the region. Both smartphones support microSD cards of up to 128GB.
The two phones will be up for sale in March
Rear camera capacity on the G5 reaches 13MP with f/2.0 aperture and PDAF support, while the camera on the G5 Plus has a 12MP capacity with f/1.7 aperture and dual autofocus pixels, which uses 10 times more pixels on the sensor and allows the came to lock onto a subject up to 60% faster than on previous phones.
Front cameras on both phones have the same 5MP capacity with f/2.2 aperture. Moto G5 and G5 Plus feature removable batteries, the standard model has a battery of 2,800mAh, while the larger model 3,000mAh with TurboPower. Both phones run Android 7.1 out of the box.
Both phones will be launched in March, the G5 will carry a price tag of about €199 for the 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage variant, but it won’t be made available in the US. The price for the G5 Plus will start at $229.
