Meizu today announced its latest budget smartphone, dubbed the M5. The smartphone packs a larger 5.2” 720 x 1280 HD display, which is 0.2” larger than the m3s. On top of the panel, you even get a layer of 2.5D curved glass.
Under the hood, it runs on the MediaTek MT6750 1.5 GHz octa-core chipset with the Mali T860 GPU and either 2GB or 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM. The 2GB RAM variant gets 16GB of internal memory, while the 3GB RAM variant comes with 32GB of built-in storage. Both versions do include a hybrid dual-SIM slot, so you will be able to use a microSD card to expand the storage further if you can live with just a single SIM.
The primary camera at the back offers 13MP resolution and integrates phase detection autofocus that is claimed to help it lock focus in just 0.2 seconds. A dual-tone LED flash sits next to the below the rear camera lens. On the front, the smartphone is equipped with a 5MP unit for selfies.
Since the M5 is an entry-level smartphone, there is no fancy metal build on offer. Instead, the smartphone is made out of polycarbonate. The smartphone runs on Yun OS 5.1, with the company’s Flyme OS 5.5 skin running on top. Keeping the lights on is a 3070mAh capacity battery, which is slightly larger than the one inside its predecessor. Connectivity features include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n dual-band, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS with A-GPS, and 4G VoLTE. The fingerprint scanner is positioned on the front, claimed to be able to unlock the device in under 0.2 seconds. In terms of dimensions, the handset measures 147.28 x 72.8 x 8mm and weighs in at 138 grams.
The Meizu M5 will be going on sale in China starting November in Mint Green, Glacier White, Champagne Gold, Sapphire Blue, and Matte Black colors. The base variant with 2GB of RAM will cost CNY 699 (S$144), while the 3GB variant has been priced at CNY 899 (S$185).
