Smartphones with super-slim bezels have been around for a few years, but they’re not exactly common… yet. Xiaomi recently launched the Mi Mix smartphone with a ceramic body and a 6.4 inch screen which covered almost all of the phone’s front, except for a small strip along the bottom.
Now there’s a rumor making the rounds suggesting that rival Chinese phone maker Meizu has its own bezel-free phone on the way… and if leaked images are to be believed, the Meizu Pro 7 won’t even have that thin black strip along the bottom.
The phone also reportedly has some pretty beefy specs.
Meizu’s phone is rumored to be powered by a Kirin 960 processor and 6GB of RAM. It’s said to have a SonyIMX386 camera, and may feature an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor placed beneath the glass, which would be one way of making sure you could use a fingerprint sensor on a phone with no bezels (another would be to put it on the back of the phone).
Leaked slides suggest the phone will have a 5.6 inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 and that the phone will be available with 64GB or 128GB storage options.
Meizu has yet to officially confirm the rumors, but if the slides are accurate, the new phone will be unveiled December 24th, so I guess we have a little more than a month to go until we find out if a bezel-free Meizu Pro 7 is a real thing.
My money would have been on fake a few weeks ago. But after Xiaomi introduced the Mi Mix as a limited edition phone, phones with nearly nothing but glass on the front definitely seem to be more than a sci fi fantasy. Whether they’re as easy to use as phones with more traditional designs remains to be seen.
