Mediatek is finally gearing up to take down Qualcomm in 2018 with Mediatek Helio P40. Antutu score will be close to Helio X30 level with 12nm fabrication process, new ARM cores and G72 GPU.
Mediatek badly need a design win with Snapdragon 625/630 cleaning out Helio P20/25’s clocks. Recently, MTK announced Helio P23 and P30 which bring little upgrade in the form of Mali G71 GPU, compared to T880 used in P20/25. Interesting enough, both new chips will not increace CPU clock speeds from Helio P20, but will focus on graphics performance and efficiecny. Both Helio P20/23 will be equipped with new modems and optimized architecture.
Mediatek Helio P40 vs Snapdragon 670
Rumours suggest Qualcomm will release Snapdragon 670 in Q1 2018 along with Snapdragon 845. Expect a tight Mediatek Helio P40 vs Snapdragon 670 mid-range smartphone chip battle in 2018. According to leaked specs today, the latest Helio chips will feature a new CPU design and the latest ARM GPU. In addition the P40 will contiue to support dual 4G and dual VOLTE and be made in the new 12nm node. On the other hand, Snapdragon 670 will be using 10nm node, same as Snapdragon 835 and Helio X30.
Leaks claim test chips scored north of 120,000 points in Antutu, which is close to Helio X30 scores and higher than Snapdragon 660.
Appraching with high-optimism would be cautious, but Mediatek really have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Ever since Snapdragon 821 and 625, Helio chips have been avoided by consumers and known brands, but there is still hope. Using the new 12nm processing node, Helio P40 can level the plainfield and actually produce an efficient and fast chip. We all know P40 will likely cost much lower than SD670 for manufacturers and customs alike.
Not only that, but mid-range Exynos and Kirin chips are coming in 2018. Instead of just fighting Qualcomm, MTK must also face up to Huawei and Samsung. The ball is in your court Mediatek.
