Nintendo employee and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto is a fan of Minecraft and wishes it was a Nintendo creation. He says a “lot of experiments” with something reminiscent of Minecraft were carried out internally, but they never led to an actual game. Now that it’s clear the style of Minecraft is popular and enjoyable, Miyamoto wishes things had turned out differently.
I do like Minecraft, but really more from the perspective of the fact that I really feel like that’s something we should have made. We had actually done a lot of experiments that were similar to that back in the N64 days and we had some designs that were very similar. It’s really impressive to me to see how they’ve been able to take that idea and turn it into a product. – Miyamoto
Mojang released Minecraft in 2011. Both were acquired a few years later by Microsoft.
Even after quite a few years, Minecraft continues to sell well and is a very popular game.
