After an ice fishing trip in March, one iPhone user just found his lost phone.
In March of 2015, Michael Guntrum from Knox, Pennsylvania was on an ice fishing trip with some friends when the unthinkable happened. His iPhone 4 fell into the water and sunk into the depths of Kyle Lake . “We were having negative 25-degree weather, so me and two buddies with ice fishing,” Guntrum told BuzzFeed News. “We were sitting in our portable shanty, and I got a bite on my rod. I laid the phone on my lap, and it slipped off. Instead of landing flat in the snow, it hit its edge and rolled into the hole. I caught the fish – it was a blue gill – but it wasn’t worth it.”
In most cases, that would have been the last time Guntrum saw his phone, but in this case, a bit of luck would reunite them. In September of last year, the lake was completely drained because of structural issues and restoration work. The lake has remained empty ever since. Last month, mechanical engineer Daniel Kalgren was treasure hunting with a metal detector on the empty lake bed, when he found something. There, buried under six inches of mud and clay, was Guntrum’s iPhone.
Kalgren brought the phone home, cleaned it and put it in a bed of rice to dry out, curious as to whether it would still work. After two days, amazingly, it turned on when Kalgren plugged it in. He was then able to retrieve the owner’s number. Guntrum received a text with an attached picture of his phone and the message “Does this look familiar?”. Guntrum recognized the phone’s screensaver immediately.
The water resistant OtterBox may be what saved the phone
Kalgren noted that the phone was in a water-resistant OtterBox iPhone case and said he wasn’t sure his iPhone 6 could survive the same conditions, but would like to think it could. “It never ceases to amaze us, all the incredible iPhone survival stories our customers have shared with us,” said an Apple spokesperson. Guntrum is planning to repair the recovered phone and give it to his mom, who needs a smartphone.
