With Android 7.0 Nougat, Google Pixel and Pixel XL users have received a special feature called seamless updates. If you haven’t heard about it until now, the feature basically allows you to continue using your devices while the OTA update process takes place. The only downtime is during the reboot into the updated system.
The update is installed on a different disk partition, so you can keep using your phone even if the update keeps failing to install.
According to a set of commits to Lineage OS, the same functionality will soon be available on the custom ROM. There is also a catch – only phones that have had this feature available already will be able to use it, meaning only the Pixel and Pixel XL.
