LG reportedly drops its plan to use a curved OLED display …

LG was apparently planning to take on the Samsung Galaxy S8 with a dual-curved edge display-toting G6 next year. However, the South Korean consumer electronics giant is said to have changed its mind now, claims a new report out of South Korea.

The reason behind the decision is that LG Display isn’t yet capable of shipping enough OLED panels for the G6. It will be able to supply the required quantity of OLED panels only in the second half of 2017, which is too late for the G6 as it will likely make its debut in the first quarter of 2017.

LG has also reportedly developed a new resonant magnetic technology for wireless charging, which will allow multiple smartphones to be charged when placed 2-3cm from the charger. This technology too isn’t likely to be ready in time for the G6, so it could possibly be introduced with the V20 successor or the G7 in 2018.

As for the G6 itself, the report claims the smartphone is going to feature a metal body with a tempered glass finish. The G5 received a lot of flak for its build quality, despite LG’s claims of a “metal unibody design”. What remains to be seen is whether LG will continue with the modular design approach next year, or if the G5’s mediocre sales performance will force LG to introduce a less outlandish design with the G6. The recently launched V20 phablet does not use a modular design, which could possibly suggest that LG is done with the modular concept, at least for now.
