The first flagship smartphone in 2017 from a top-tier company is finally here. At the LG MWC 2017 press conference, the company has finally unveiled its LG G6 smartphone, ending all rumours. While the LG G5 was a great smartphone, its successor looks to be on the right track for the best phone of 2017.
Let’s start with the design. As LG says, the G6 offers a big screen that actually fits in your hand. Unlike its predecessor that had a modular design with the support for Friends modules, the phone has an unibody metal chassis with a high-gloss back and a very clean design. The chassis houses a 5.7-inch FullVision display with 1,440 x 2,880 pixels resolution and an 18:9 aspect ratio, but it has the footprint of a 5.2-inch phone. LG G6 is also the first phone that supports Dolby Vision, which provides much better colors and experience.
The front panel is very clean with only a 13 MP front camera, two sensors and no physical home button. On the back, we have dual 13 MP cameras and a fingerprint scanner. The left side has volume buttons, the right only SIM card tray and the antenna lines are on the top and bottom. The bottom side also has a USB Type-C port, a speaker grill and a microphone. The 3.5mm earphone jack is located at the top.
Another thing to note about the design is that the phone is now water and dustproof as it supports IP68 rating. To prevent Galaxy Note 7-like scenario, LG has employed a copper heat pipe cooling system. According to the company, G6’s battery won’t overheat even at temperatures of up to 150° C, but unfortunately the battery is non-removable. The phone’s dimensions are 148.9 x 71.9 x 7.9 mm.
As for the specs, the LG G6 features last year’s Snapdragon 821 paired with 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of expandable storage and a 3,300 mAh battery. The company has also improved the audio performance with a new 32-bit quad-DAC and there are also B&O in-ear headphones bundled with every unit.
As mentioned above, the phone has dual 13 MP rear cameras with a 125-degree field of view and a single 5 MP selfie shooter with a 100-degree field of view. There are also various camera modes included, such as a 360-degree panorama mode, a “food” mode and a split screen feature for simultaneously taking 1:1 square photos and previewing them on the side.
Last, but not least is software. The new UX comes with rounded corner and a new user interface, to complement the new FullVision display. The LG G6 also comes with Google’s Assistant AI and runs latest Android 7.0 Nougat operating system.
The phone is available in three color options – Ice Platinum, Mystic Black and a gray option. With every LG G6, owners will also get $200 worth of in-game content for 6 games. The company has yet to announce availability and price information, as well as some specifications.
