Despite rebounding prices for LED products, development of the LED industry still faces problems due to overcapacity, according to president Dai Zhen-jia for Nichia Taiwan.
Problems include intense price competition among LED lighting vendors, and China-based LED makers continuing to expand production capacities, Dai said.
Nichia expects 2016 consolidated revenues to reach JPY330 billion (US$2.92 billion), roughly flat on year, Dai noted.
LED backlighting and lighting will account for 30% of 2016 consolidated revenues, LED automotive lighting for 20%, ultraviolet (UV) LED and displays for about 45% and laser LEDs for 5%. Nichia expects the revenue proportion from LED automotive lighting to rise to 30% in 2020 and for laser LEDs to 20%. For LED automotive lighting in particular, Nichia will launch adaptive front lighting systems in 2017.
