Kodak Brings Back Ektra Brand With Smartphone

240

Kodak has brought back its ‘Ektra’ brand, which was once used for a rangefinder in the 1940s, with a camera-centric smartphone. The new Ektra includes a protruding 21-megapixel camera on its rear. A Sony IMX230 sensor is used on the phone and the camera is surrounded by a dark “leatherette” exterior.

Just as it tried to do with its IM5 smartphone last year, Kodak hopes this unit will appeal to amateur photographers. However, camera enthusiasts are often fine with the picture quality of a phone like the iPhone 7 and non-enthusiasts won’t even consider a device like the Ektra.

Included with the handset is a deca-core MediaTek Helio X20 processor, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of expandable storage, a 3000 mAh battery, and a 5-inch 1080p display. It comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

The Ektra will be available in Europe for £449 (€499) beginning in December. No US launch plans currently exist.
