KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the iPhone 8 will come with a depth-sensing camera that’ll enable 3D photos. The new “revolutionary” camera is going to add 3D data to 2D images. This could be used for upgraded selfies as well as for face and iris recognition.
Kuo expects the camera could be utilized for bringing a user’s face into an app or game. Since Apple is interested in augmented reality, it makes sense the company would look to add components of this sort.
Apple is going to use software developed by PrimeSense, which it purchased in 2013.
The iPhone 7 Plus already has limited depth-sensing capabilities. The iPhone 8 will offer a more advanced form of that feature.
