Intel on Tuesday launched a new family of server processors to accelerate mission-critical computing. Based on Intel’s 32nm technology, the new Intel Xeon E7 processors have up to 10 cores with Intel Hyper-Threading Technology.
Intel said the new processors deliver up to 40 percent greater performance than the Intel Xeon 7500 series. What’s more, a new energy-saving feature promises to reduce the power draw of idle portions of the chip. The new processor family contains 18 new processors for two-, four- and eight-socket servers, and is expandable to servers with 256 sockets.
Beyond Price and Performance
At the Xeon E7 launch, Kirk Skaugen, vice president and general manager of Intel’s Data Center Group, presented a pair of charts that put x86 developments into clear and brutal context, according to Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.
King said the first chart compared IDC’s 2002 and 2010 server market-share data. In 2002, RISC-based Unix and mainframes accounted for $ 30 billion in server sales, or more than 60 percent of the market, compared to $ 19.6 billion for Intel’s x86. By 2010, those positions had essentially reversed with Intel x86 servers garnering $ 30.5 billion in sales compared to $ 15 billion for RISC-based and mainframe systems. The second chart, King noted, made performance comparisons. Intel outperformed the competition — and at a lower cost.
Still, King said, mission-critical computing is about far more than price and performance. In fact, he said, mission-critical solutions are typically defined as much by their reliability, availability and security features as their data-crunching capabilities. That’s because they support applications and workloads that are crucial to the day-to-day functionality and success of the businesses that use them.
