The wearable division within Intel has been entirely “eliminated” and the New Technologies Group is going to be focused on augmented reality moving forward. While Intel is going to continue partnering with companies in the wearable space, it has moved away from creating its own devices in that sector.
Last year, Intel had to recall all of its Basis Peak smartwatches because of an overheating problem. And in November 2016, Intel got rid of 80% of the Basis team. It acquired Basis for $100 million in 2014 in hopes of making a big push into the industry.
