Intel decided to kill its own division that worked on health wearables, including fitness trackers, in favour of augmented reality. Although the company did not mention wearables on its earnings calls since 2014, and has yet to officially confirm the rumours, the whole division working on smartwatches and fitness trackers was axed two weeks ago.
The report mentions that Intel let 80 percent of the Basis group, the wearable maker it acquired back in 2014 for $100 million, go in November and eliminated the group completely two weeks ago. The good thing is that many of the employees were given the opportunity to be reassigned to other parts of the company.
