Scottsdale, Ariz. — Nov. 10, 2011 — Learning complicated math and science concepts is a challenge for many students, but even more so for those who are still learning how to speak English. America’s public schools enroll about 5 million English language learners (ELLs), 79% of whom speak Spanish fluently. After doubling over the last 15 years, ELLs are now the fastest growing segment of learners in the United States.
To help meet the needs of this growing population and the instructors who teach them, Adaptive Curriculum has released its AC Math and AC Science concept-mastery content in Spanish. Designed for grades 6-12, AC Math and AC Science engages digital-age learners by integrating real-world scenarios, cutting-edge graphics and interactive simulations into active, standards-based learning. Unlike textbooks or drill-and-practice programs, Adaptive Curriculum’s active learning approach motivates learners to explore, make hypotheses, manipulate items and see the impact of their decisions, thus developing and deepening their conceptual understanding.
In the Brownsville Independent School District in Texas, nearly all of its 50,000 students are Hispanic, and one-third is classified as limited English proficient. Besteiro Middle School in Brownsville began a limited implementation of Adaptive Curriculum in 2007. Principal Alma Cardenas-Rubio saw such impressive results that the program is now used campus-wide, as well as in other Brownsville schools.
“Students always need to connect their learning to real life application in order to retain information for longer periods of time. Adaptive Curriculum helps them learn and remember concepts because it connects to real applications,” said Cardenas-Rubio. “With Adaptive Curriculum our science scores have gone up every year, and our math scores three or four points a year, and that’s just with the English version. Imagine what we can accomplish when we can use the new Spanish content with our Spanish speakers who’ve not yet mastered English!”
An additional benefit of Adaptive Curriculum’s content in Spanish-is that teachers will be able to support non-English speaking students, both in and out of the classroom. The web-based solution can be accessed at home 24/7, allowing students to extend their learning outside the classroom and to even share their lessons with non-English speaking parents.
“English language learners, like native speakers, learn best when they are engaged, can explore, and can move at their own pace. This is exactly how Adaptive Curriculum teaches math and science. It’s presented in an exploratory manner and supports different learning styles, thereby improving student performance by increasing understanding at a deeper conceptual level,” said Jim Bowler, CEO of Adaptive Curriculum. “The fact that we can extend those benefits to the Hispanic segment of our ELL population in the United States is a testament to the fact that we’re committed to the successful transformation of all students.”
The Spanish language content in AC Math and AC Science is available as an option to all Adaptive Curriculum customers.
