Huawei’s new top-of-the-line chipset, the Kirin 960, has been unveiled Wednesday morning in China. The big.LITTLE architecture is used here with four high powered Cortex-A73 cores and four lower powered Cortex-A53 cores. The chip also features the Mali-G71 MP8 GPU. Compared to the Kirin 950, the new chipset achieves a 15% CPU efficiency improvement. The GPU efficiency is hiked by 20% with a 180% improvement in graphics performance.

The Kirin 960 SoC supports LPDDR4 RAM, and the modem supports LTE Cat. 12/13. This means that download speeds up to 600Mbps, and upload speeds of 150Mbps can be handled by the Kirin 960. The chipset supports CDMA and radio frequencies ranging between 330MHz to 3.8GHz. The chip is built by TSMC using the 16nm FinFET process.

The slideshow shows off a series of slides that reveal how the Kirin 960 chipset measures up to the competition in benchmark tests. On GFXBench, the Kirin 960 is second to the Apple A10 chipset. On Geekbench, the Kirin 960 was second to the A10 in the single-core test, but topped all chips in the multi-core test. Other tests showed the Kirin 960 topping all of its rivals.

We should see the Kirin 960 make its debut with the Huawei Mate 9. The high-end Android-flavored handset is expected to be unveiled on November 3rd.
