Huawei reportedly making a 7” Pixel tablet for Google

Well-known leakster Evan Blass today revealed in a tweet that Huawei is currently developing a 7” tablet for Google. The tablet is apparently going to be released before the end of the year, although we expect it to be announced alongside the Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones next month.

The leakster did not reveal any info regarding the tablet’s spec-sheet, except that it will come equipped with 4GB of RAM, so it isn’t clear for now if the tablet will be a high-end model like the Pixel C from last year, or if it will be a value-focused tablet like the previous 7” Nexus tablets from Google.  It should be noted that the last 7” tablet from Google was released in 2013, the Asus-made Nexus 7 (2013).

Interestingly, Blass did not refer to the tablet as being a ‘Nexus’ device, which basically confirms that the Nexus brand may be axed soon. Last week an Android Police report revealed that the HTC-made ‘Sailfish’ and ‘Marlin’ would be marketed as the Google Pixel and Pixel XL, respectively. The Pixel brand was originally reserved mainly for Chromebooks, but this changed last year when Google unveiled the Pixel C Android tablet along with the Nexus 5X and 6P.

The 7” Pixel tablet could be made official on October 4th, which is when the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones are expected to be officially unveiled by Google. Apart from new Pixel-branded smartphones and tablets, Google could also announce a Daydream VR headset and a next-generation Chromecast with 4K support. However, since the tablet is expected to release only before the end of the year, interested consumers may need to wait several weeks after the announcement to get their hands on one.
