Huawei has quietly added a new member to its Mate 9 family. After the Mate 9, Mate 9 Porsche Edition, and the Mate 9 Pro, the manufacturer has announced the mid-range Mate 9 Lite.

The Mate 9 Lite features a 5.5-inch display with 1080 x 1920 Full HD resolution and 2.5D curved glass on top. Under the hood, it packs the company’s mid-range Kirin 655 octa-core SoC. In terms of memory, the smartphone will be available in two versions – 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM & 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM.

At the back, Mate 9 Lite boasts of a dual-camera setup like its more expensive siblings, but with a downgraded 12MP + 2MP solution. As expected from a mid-range offering, you don’t get Leica-branded lenses either. The primary 12MP sensor integrates phase detection autofocus and comes with 1.25 micron sized pixels. The 2MP secondary sensor is mainly used for depth sensing purposes only. For selfies and video calls, Mate 9 Lite features an 8MP unit on the front.

The smartphone features a premium metal unibody design, with the fingerprint scanner positioned at the back of the device. Keeping the lights on is a 3,340mAh unit, which is not too bad for a mid-range device. It measures 150.9 x 76.2 x 8.2mm in terms of dimensions and weighs in at 162 grams. Unfortunately, the Mate 9 Lite does not run on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat platform like the rest of its siblings. Instead, it will launch with Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, with the company’s EMUI 4.1 custom UI layer on top. While the company hasn’t announced any pricing or availability info yet, it will be offered with three color options at launch – Gold, Silver, and Gray.
