The HTC 10 is a major improvement over some of the previous flagship smartphones from the company and is among the best Android flagships released this year. However, despite releasing a truly competitive flagship handset on the market this year, HTC’s fortunes haven’t changed for the better. According to a DigiTimes report, the Taiwanese company may not be able to meet its 2016 smartphone shipment target.
HTC had shipped a total of 18 million smartphones in 2015, but the tally is expected to drop to around 10-12 million units for 2016. The company has seen sales in China, the US, and Europe fall significantly this year, which is the main reason why shipments have dropped significantly year-on-year. HTC isn’t even the biggest Taiwanese smartphone vendor anymore, as that title now belongs to Asustek.
2016 hasn’t been a great year for Asus either, as it is expected to ship just 20 million smartphones in 2016, down from its target of 25 million units. Similar to HTC, Asustek too saw sales drop in China, Europe, and the US.
Acer too is reportedly going to miss its 10 million shipment target for the year. The company is likely to ship only around five million smartphones this year, roughly half of its initial target. Sources believe 2017 may not be significantly better for Taiwanese smartphone makers, owing to tough competition from Chinese smartphone makers.
