Besides reading MSpoweruser’s growing tip and how-to guides, there are a number of ways you can get direct troubleshooting on Windows 10 without even having to open the Internet. Microsoft ships two default apps for this purpose. Quick Assist, and Contact Support (to be renamed as Get Help) in the Windows 10 Creators Update. For the purpose of this article, we will be focusing on the Quick Assist app.

Quick Aassist is Microsoft’s native answer to TeamViewer. Instead of having to install software from dubious locations, all Windows 10 PCs from the Anniversary Update on have Quick Assist installed and you can use that to get help from trusted family and friends who have the computer know-how to fix your device.

If you’re the family and/or friend with the tech know-how, Quick Assist lets you quickly take over the target PC without having to pass down potentially misinterpreted instructions over the phone – it’s a time saver.

Here’s how to use Quick Assist on Windows 10

  1. Open Quick Assist by typing quick Assist into the Search Bar/Cortana or from the Start Menu under Windows Accessories. If you’re looking at receiving assistance, check out steps 2 -3, otherwise skip to step 4
  2. To get assistance, select the “Get Assistance” option and enter the 6 digit code when prompted.
  3. This will allow your partner to take control of your PC remotely. It must be stressed that this must be someone you trust because otherwise, they will be able to take control of your PC and see your files as if they were right there over your shoulder. For the duration of the session, there will be a small toolbar visible on the screen with the words “Screen Sharing on”.
  4. If instead you need to give assistance to someone via Quick Assist select the “Give Assistance option” and then sign into your Microsoft account.
  5. The Quick Assist app will now generate a code that you can share to whoever you’re helping allowing them to grant you access to their PC as seen in step 2. You can share this code via email, or copy to your clipboard and then paste in your messaging app or service of choice.
  6. Once connected, you will have access to your partner’s screen and be able to work on their computer as if it were yours.
  7. Once troubleshooting is completed, either party can discontinue the screen sharing by closing the Quick Assist window, r ending screen sharing in the app. Note: If the Wifi Connection drops, screen sharing will be disrupted and you will need to reconnect and start again.
