Google Working on New Operating System Called 'Fuchsia'

Google is quietly working on a new operating system called Fuchsia.

Little is known about the project beyond what the search giant posted on GitHub, a site where programmers can share open source projects.

The description for the project simply says: Pink + Purple == Fuchsia (a new Operating System)

While Google is keeping quiet on its plans for the operating system, there is one key difference that stands out between Magenta and Google’s Chrome and Android operating systems.

Those operating systems run on the Linux kernel. Android Police, which reported the existence of Fuchsia on Friday, dug into the documentation and learned the new OS will run off a Magenta kernel.

A kernel is the central part of an operating system — and this change suggests Google is perhaps building Fuchsia to run on embedded devices — perhaps in the Internet of Things, or as an interface for augmented reality.

A Google representative declined to comment.
