Google Upgrading AMP To Further Reduce Data Consumption

291

Google is rolling out some improvements to AMP that’ll bring down its data usage and also make it more useful on low-end devices. One of the new features, AMP Cache, partly deals with images since they make up 64% of the byes on the average page.

AMP Cache will reduce that figure up to 40% and images will be automatically converted to Google’s WebP format. AMP will also remove data that’s already invisible to users, such as metadata.

The other new feature, AMP Lite, is an optimized version of the system that works well on slow connections and on low-end devices. It reduces JPEG quality “when there is an indication that this is desired by the user or for very slow network conditions.” It’ll also optimize external fonts.
