Language pairs that haven’t specifically been taught to Google Translate will now be supported by the system. This “Zero-Shot Translation” capability, which relies on AI, works by first translating content into a common language the system understands. From there, sentences can be translated into the target language.
Translate supports 103 languages and can technically work with 5,233 pairs. Prior to the implementation of the Google Neural Machine Translation (GNMT) system, Translate had to be trained for each pair.
GNMT has improved Translate in other ways, particularly by allowing the service to create more human-like translations based around sentences rather than words and phrases.
