Thousands of people in Kansas City who thought they were going to receive Google Fiber are no longer going to get the gigabit internet service. Bloomberg reports Google has cancelled many installations in the area, likely upsetting a large number of households.
Google accepted signups and took deposits (around $10) from many customers in the region, but it ultimately decided not to move forward with some installations. Over time, Fiber has changed its practices so that it only takes deposits from people it believes it can serve relatively soon.
The deposits will be returned to the affected customers.
Google says it is still committed to Fiber and to serving people in Kansas City.
