The wait is finally over. Google has finally started to rollout 4K content on Google Play Movies. However, you will not be able to access 4K UHD content on your smartphone or tablet. The 4K option is being limited to Google Chromecast Ultra and 4K televisions running on the Android TV platform. Android TV streaming devices such as the SHIELD Android TV and the recently unveiled Xiaomi Mi Box should be able to access 4K content as well.
As expected, 4K content has been priced higher than HD content, up to twice as much in most cases. Google hasn’t added a separate section in the app for 4K content, the option is presented when you try to purchase a movie in the app. Instead of just SD and HD options, you will now be seeing a “Rent UHD” or “Buy UHD” option as well. As we mentioned above, smartphone and tablet owners will continue to see only two options – SD and HD when renting or purchasing movies on Google Play Movies.
The 4K option hasn’t been rolled out in all regions yet, but Google is slowly making it available in various regions around the globe. At this point, it is not clear if Google plans to allow smartphones and tablets to access 4K content on Google Play Movies in the near future.
