If Google had hoped to have an element of surprise when it announced its newest smartphones next month, the company is going to be sorely disappointed. We have already seen the Pixel and Pixel XL in leaked images in the last few weeks, and the Android Nougat-powered handsets have once again been outed in pictures. Popular leakster evleaks has released press renders of each device, further confirming everything that we have seen recently.
The Pixel and Pixel XL are set to be unveiled on October 4th, a day Google says will be as big as the day Android was announced eight years ago. In addition to the Pixel handsets, Google is also expected to release a Nexus tablet made by Huawei; the tablet will reportedly keep the Nexus brand alive while the internet giant moves to the Pixel branding for its smartphones. Google is also going to reveal details on the merger of Android and Chrome OS, the Amazon Echo competitor Google Home, and the 4K streaming capable Google Chromecast Ultra. It remains to be seen if these announcements are the reason Google believes the day will be a big one for Android, or if the company has something else in store.
The Pixel and Pixel XL are expected to include 5-inch and 5.5-inch Full HD and Quad HD displays, the Snapdragon 820 processor, a 12-megapixel rear camera, 4GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel front-facing camera, 32GB of internal storage, USB Type-C ports, and 2,770 and 3,450 mAh batteries. The devices are being manufactured by HTC, which is rumored to be the maker of Pixel/Nexus phones for the next three years. Google will announce availability details on October 4th along with pricing information; the 5-inch Pixel is expected to be priced at $649. The Pixel XL will likely be priced north of $700 for the base model, although nothing is fully confirmed at this point.
