SMS support will disappear from Google Hangouts on May 22. The company confirmed its decision to remove regular texting from the app in an email to G Suite users. Once the update goes out, users will be asked to pick a different client.
Since last year, Google has been pushing people to use Messenger for regular texting. But it’s also been supporting SMS in Hangouts since 2013.
You’ll still be able to use Hangouts for communication with Google Voice numbers, but it’s not going to work with any carrier numbers.
