Google has now officially confirmed end of its effort to build a modular smartphone. Despite promising to ship the Ara phone to developers this fall, the company’s spokesperson told VentureBeat that the phone would not be coming to the market, after nearly three years of development. The decision was reportedly made by Google hardware chief Rick Osterloh in order to “streamline the company’s hardware efforts.”
Luckily, there are companies that are still interested in modular smartphones. One of them is Nexpaq, who has hired founder of Project Ara and former Head of Design at Google ATAP, Dan Makoski, to develop a modular phone. He didn’t provide any details, but did say the phone will ship soon.
