Ahead of Google’s media event next week, an alleged press render of the next-gen Google Chromecast has leaked online. To be marketed as the Chromecast Ultra, the device will support 4K streaming thanks to beefy hardware inside.
As you can see in the press render above, the Chromecast Ultra will not feature the Chromecast logo like previous generation devices. Instead, there will only be a classic “G” logo. The upcoming Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones are also going to feature just a “G” logo at the back, instead of the Nexus logo on all previous devices.
The device will purportedly run on firmware version 1.21 when it goes on sale and could be priced at $69, which is roughly twice as much as the current Chromecast dongle. Quite clearly, consumers will need to pay a premium to be able to stream Ultra HD content. The current Chromecast dongle will continue to sell alongside the Chromecast Ultra, so buyers who do not require 4K streaming support will still be able to go for the older and more affordable Chromecast dongle. Unfortunately, no details are available yet regarding the hardware inside the upcoming Chromecast Ultra.
At its October 4th event, Google will also be unveiling the new Pixel-branded smartphones made by HTC, a Daydream VR headset, a Wi-Fi router, new Google Home to take on Amazon Echo, and possibly a Pixel-branded 7” tablet manufactured by Huawei.
