Google AI Boss Isn't Worried About An 'AI Apo…

Google’s AI chief John Giannandrea doesn’t share Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s concern about a possible “AI apocalypse.” Instead, he actually feels discussions of that sort are “unwarranted” and really aren’t responsible, presumably because they could generate fear that’ll negatively impact AI development.

There’s a huge amount of unwarranted hype around AI right now. This leap into, ‘Somebody is going to produce a superhuman intelligence and then there’s going to be all these ethical issues’ is unwarranted and borderline irresponsible. – Giannandrea

Musk has received some support from members of the AI community, but a lot of the thought leaders in that field feel the concerns are overblown. Andrew Ng, one of the top AI scientists in the world, is of the opinion that Musk’s concerns shouldn’t be a primary focus right now.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has a similar perspective. Musk responded to Zuckerberg by saying he has a “limited” view of AI’s potential.
