Some of you might be aware by now that Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones will not feature a fingerprint scanner on the front. In order to achieve a high screen-to-body ratio, Samsung has moved the fingerprint scanner from the front to the back of the two devices. In future however, Samsung smartphones may not include a fingerprint scanner at all.
According to a tweet out of China, a Samsung employee recently said, “We will kill the fingerprint scanner, it’s obsolete”. Fingerprint scanners could be replaced by iris scanners as well as a new facial recognition technology that will debut with the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.While the iris scanner on the Galaxy Note 7 did not prove to be very reliable, the new facial recognition technology will reportedly allow users to unlock their Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8+ in just .01 seconds.
While the authenticity of the info hasn’t been verified yet, it does suggest that Samsung might not include a fingerprint scanner on its 2018 flagship handsets. Rival Apple too is reported to be toying with the idea of doing away with its “Touch ID” fingerprint scanners in the near future. In fact, according to JP Morgan analyst Rod Hall, the iPhone 8 could incorporate advanced 3D facial recognition technology, which will allow Apple to eliminate the Touch ID button on the handset.
