Fitbit Won't Cut Pebble Services Until At Least 20…

217

New Pebble smartwatches aren’t going to see the light of day now that it’s being acquired by Fitbit, but existing devices will continue working until at least 2018. Fitbit says it’s “going out of its way” to keep Pebble-related software and services running through next year.

To be clear, no one on this freshly-formed team seeks to brick Pebble watches in active service. The Pebble SDK, CloudPebble, Timeline APIs, firmware availability, mobile apps, developer portal and Pebble appstore are all elements of the Pebble ecosystem that will remain in service at this time. – Jon Barlow, Fitbit

Core apps will be updated so that they can still function even if their cloud services are discontinued. Those app updates will arrive in the coming months. It’s not clear how long apps will function if they require third-party services, such as weather.
