Federal authorities in the US have confirmed they were involved in the shut down of AlphaBay, the largest dark net marketplace in the world. AlphaBay was “10 times the size of Silk Road,” says Acting Director of the FBI Andrew McCabe. The Department of Justice says US authorities collaborated with law enforcement around the world to take down the site.
At the same time as the removal of AlphaBay was highlighted, Deputy Attorney General Rob Rosenstein noted the shutdown of Hansa Market, a similar site, by Dutch authorities.
There are still many dark net marketplaces selling drugs and other illicit items, but the shutdown of sites like AlphaBay will have at least a short-term impact on that industry.
