An investigation by the NHTSA into a fatal accident associated with Tesla’s Autopilot feature has cleared Tesla of any fault and determined no recall is required. The investigation began over six months ago.
It was found the driver in the accident had seven seconds to take action to avoid the accident. Although the sensor system used by Autopilot didn’t respond correctly in that instance, presumed inattentiveness on the driver’s part was to blame.
The NHTSA’s report also notes that Tesla’s crash rate has declined 40% since Autopilot became available.
