Some of the world’s largest technology companies have joined forces to reduce public concerns associated with the development of advanced artificial intelligence. Facebook, Google/DeepMind, Amazon, Microsoft, and IBM are now part of the Partnership on AI, which is chaired by Microsoft Research chief Eric Horvitz and DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman.
The Partnership on AI plans to educate the public about AI and its impact on humanity. It’ll also work with companies in the AI space to make sure as many as possible are adopting industry best practices.
The reason we all work on AI is because we passionately believe its ability to transform our world. The positive impact of AI will depend not only on the quality of our algorithms, but the on the amount of public discussion … to ensure AI is understood by and benefits as many people as possible. – Suleyman
Based on its mission statement, the partnership is coming from the perspective that AI is not something to be particularly worried about. According to Horvitz, concerns about AI are now part of an “echo chamber of anxiety,” which the partnership wants to address.
Apple has been talking with the group, though it has yet to join.
