Evernote Pulls Back Privacy Policy Update, Note Reading…

209

Evernote has backtracked on its controversial privacy policy update. The update will no longer be applied in January and when the company lets employees read user notes for machine learning purposes, that system will be opt-in. Under the previously described update, users would need to opt-out of having their partly censored notes read by some employees.

The privacy policy was going to roll out on January 23, but it was quickly hit with significant backlash, forcing Evernote to reconsider.

After receiving a lot of customer feedback expressing concerns about our upcoming Privacy Policy changes over the past few days, Evernote is reaffirming its commitment to keep privacy at the center of what we do. In the coming months we will be revising our existing Privacy Policy to address our customers’ concerns […] In addition, we will make machine learning technologies available to our users, but no employees will be reading note content as part of this process unless users opt in. – Evernote

As the company comes up with alternative changes to its privacy policy, it’ll seek feedback from users.
